US-401 Intersection Improvements

The project will improve traffic and reduce congestion on this high-volume intersection of U.S. 401 at Ligon Mill Road and Mitchell Mill Road in Raleigh on this vital corridor.

The U.S. 401 being an important link between Fayetteville, Lillington and Raleigh with the current population increasing in the area.  US 401 varies from two lanes in rural areas to four-lane divided in urban areas of North Carolina. SR 2224 (Mitchell Mill Road) and SR 2044 (Ligon Mill Road) are designated as a Major Collector. Approximately 59,800 vehicles pass through this area of U.S. 401 every day resulting in delays and congestion. By 2040, traffic will increase to approximately 93,200 vehicles per day at these intersections.

Conti is performing construction of the associated site and utility infrastructure.

Conti will perform construction of roadway widening and bridge replacement. The project will include:

  • 95,000 CY of dirt will be balanced out.
  • 3.5 miles of drainage pipes, mostly RCP from 15” up to 78”
  • 61,000 tons of asphalt paving, including a resurface of US-401.
  • 900 LF of two 78” jack & bore pipes will be installed underneath live traffic.

Scope of Work:
  • Widening of existing roadway and the construction of a new alignment
  • Installation of new utilities including storm drainage, water mains, fire hydrants relocations, and sewer line
  • Roadway excavation and embankment construction
  • Installation of new traffic signals
  • Partial demolition of the bridge to allow the widening of the bridge deck
  • Jack of the bridge superstructure for the replacement of elastomeric bearings
  • Multiple repairs and reconditioning of the existing bridge over Neuse River.
